Amazing eye facts

We don’t often give our eyes as much thought as we should, that is until something goes wrong and our vision is affected. But when you learn more about eyes, you realize just how amazing they are. Here are a few facts you may enjoy:

  1. In a very basic form, eyes are thought to have first developed in animals around 550 million years ago!
  2. You actually see with your brain, not your eyes. Our eyes function like a camera, capturing light and sending data back to the brain.

  4. In a single second, it’s possible to blink five times.
  5. You are likely to blink more often when you are talking.
  6. The eye is the fastest muscle in your body – hence why when something happens quickly, we say ‘in the blink of an eye!’
  7. A blink typically lasts 100-150 milliseconds.
  8. The human eye can function at 100% at any given moment, without needing to rest.
  9. Red-eye in photos is caused by light from the flash bouncing off the capillaries in your eyes.
  10. If the human eye was a digital camera, it would have 576 megapixels.
  11. On average, you will blink approximately 4,200,000 times in a single year.
  12. We have two eyeballs in order to give us depth perception – comparing two images allows us to determine how far away an object is from us.

  95. Oily fish, vitamin A and vitamin C can all help to preserve good eyesight.
  96. Although the function of tears is to keep eyes clean, scientists don’t understand why we cry when we are upset.
  97. Albinism affects melanin production; perhaps resulting in extra sensitivity to light and a red-eyed appearance.
  98. Your nose gets runny when you cry as the tears drain into your nasal passages.
  99. The Mayans believe that cross-eyes are attractive and so they would make efforts to ensure their children became cross-eyed.
  100. Pirates believed that wearing gold earrings improved their eyesight.
  101. The phrase ‘it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye’ comes from Ancient Rome, as the only rule for their bloody wrestling matches was ‘no eye gouging’.
