Extreme heat and exposure to the sun's rays can pose serious risks to your eye health. Whether you're spending time outdoors during a hot summer day, working near heat sources, or even enjoying a warm vacation, it's essential to take steps to protect your eyes from heat-related damage. Here’s how you can safeguard your eyes and maintain healthy vision in hot conditions.

1. Wear Sunglasses with UV Protection

One of the most effective ways to protect your eyes from the heat and harmful UV rays is by wearing sunglasses.

Choose Sunglasses with UV Protection: Ensure your sunglasses block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and even skin cancer on the eyelids.

Consider Wraparound Styles: Sunglasses that wrap around your face provide extra protection by blocking sunlight from the sides, reducing overall exposure to harmful rays.

2. Stay Hydrated

Just as your body needs hydration, so do your eyes, especially in hot weather.

Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated helps maintain the moisture balance in your eyes, reducing the risk of dry eyes, which can be exacerbated by heat and dehydration.

Use Artificial Tears: If your eyes feel dry or irritated, especially in hot or windy conditions, use artificial tears to keep them lubricated and comfortable.

3. Wear a Hat or Cap

A hat with a brim, such as a wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap, can provide additional protection for your eyes.

Shield Your Eyes from Direct Sunlight: A hat helps block sunlight from directly hitting your eyes and eyelids, reducing the risk of UV damage and heat exposure.

Reduce Glare: Hats can also reduce glare, making it easier to see clearly in bright conditions and reducing eye strain.

4. Use Safety Glasses Around Heat Sources

If you’re working near heat sources like ovens, furnaces, or during activities like welding, it's crucial to wear safety glasses.

Protect Against Heat and Debris: Safety glasses shield your eyes from intense heat and protect against flying debris or sparks that can cause eye injuries.

Choose the Right Lenses: For high-heat environments, look for safety glasses with heat-resistant lenses that offer both impact protection and resistance to high temperatures.

5. Take Breaks in the Shade

When spending extended periods outdoors in the heat, give your eyes a break.

Rest in the Shade: Take regular breaks in the shade to reduce direct exposure to heat and sunlight, which can strain and dry out your eyes.

Cool Down Your Eyes: Consider using a cool, damp cloth over your closed eyes during breaks to refresh and soothe them.

6. Be Mindful of Contact Lens Use

Heat can exacerbate dryness and discomfort for contact lens wearers.

Use Lubricating Eye Drops: If you wear contact lenses, make sure to carry lubricating eye drops to keep your eyes moist and comfortable in hot conditions.

Consider Switching to Glasses: On particularly hot or windy days, you might consider switching to glasses to give your eyes a break from contact lenses, which can be more irritating in dry or hot environments.

7. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes

When your eyes feel dry or irritated due to heat, it can be tempting to rub them, but this can do more harm than good.

Use Eye Drops Instead: Instead of rubbing your eyes, which can lead to irritation or even infection, use lubricating eye drops to alleviate discomfort.

Wash Your Hands: If you must touch your eyes, always wash your hands first to prevent transferring dirt or bacteria that can cause infections.

8. Protect Your Eyes from Hot Air and Wind

Hot, dry air or wind can cause your eyes to dry out quickly.

Use Eye Protection: When exposed to hot winds, such as when riding a bike or in an open vehicle, wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from direct air exposure.

Use a Humidifier: If you’re in a dry, air-conditioned environment, using a humidifier can help add moisture to the air, reducing eye dryness.

Conclusion

Protecting your eyes from heat is essential for maintaining good eye health and comfort. By taking simple precautions like wearing UV-protective sunglasses, staying hydrated, and using eye protection in hot environments, you can safeguard your vision and enjoy your time outdoors or in high-heat settings. Remember, your eyes are delicate, and a little care can go a long way in preventing heat-related eye problems.

When it comes to selecting sunglasses, you're faced with numerous options, including polarized and non-polarized lenses. Understanding the distinctions between these two types of glasses is essential for choosing the best eye protection for your needs. In this blog, we'll explore the differences between polarized and non-polarized glasses and their respective benefits.

Polarized Glasses

Reduced Glare: Polarized lenses contain a special filter that blocks horizontally oriented light waves, such as glare reflecting off water, roads, or snow. This reduction in glare enhances visual clarity and comfort, especially in bright outdoor settings.

Enhanced Contrast: By eliminating glare and scattered light, polarized lenses enhance contrast and depth perception, making objects appear sharper and more defined. This can be particularly beneficial for outdoor activities such as driving, fishing, or skiing.

UV Protection: Many polarized sunglasses also offer built-in UV protection, blocking harmful UVA and UVB rays to safeguard your eyes from sun damage and reduce the risk of eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Ideal for Outdoor Activities: Polarized sunglasses are well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts and individuals who spend extended periods in sunny environments, providing superior glare reduction and visual clarity.

Non-Polarized Glasses

Affordability: Non-polarized sunglasses are often more budget-friendly than their polarized counterparts, making them a cost-effective option for individuals seeking basic sun protection without additional glare reduction features.

Versatility: Non-polarized lenses offer versatility for everyday wear, suitable for a wide range of activities and environments, from casual outings to indoor settings where glare reduction may not be necessary.

Preservation of LCD and LED Displays: Polarized lenses can interfere with the visibility of LCD and LED screens, such as those found in smartphones, GPS devices, and car dashboards. Non-polarized glasses do not pose this issue, allowing for clear viewing of digital displays.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of Polarized Glasses

Polarized glasses are darker than non-polarized glasses. Their primary purpose is reducing glare that typically comes from reflective surfaces, such as snow, glass, or water. Polarization increases visual clarity by providing more contrast in particularly bright situations. The chemical filter on polarized lenses focuses exclusively on light waves, so it doesn’t alter the color of the surrounding environment the way other sunglasses might.

While polarized glasses are great for bright, reflective environments, they’re not ideal for dimmer situations where your primary concern is general sunlight. Polarized glasses don’t necessarily provide UV protection. Some polarized glasses do have this feature, but you have to look for a separate note on the glasses that specifies UV protection. If the glasses don’t include this specific note, they probably have no UV protection.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of Non-Polarized Glasses

Non-polarized glasses may seem inferior to polarized lenses, but they have many benefits in the right conditions. Non-polarized lenses usually have UV protection, which you may find lacking in certain polarized lenses. Non-polarized glasses are better at reducing the overall brightness in your environment. You’ll find it much easier to read or look at liquid-crystal-display (LCD) screens in non-polarized glasses than in polarized ones.

When To Use Polarized Glasses

Polarized sunglasses come with a higher price tag than non-polarized ones, so it’s important to make your selection mindfully. Though polarized lenses represent more of an investment, it’s often worth it. You should wear polarized glasses if you’re in any type of outdoor situation where there’s a lot of glare.

Polarized lenses are a necessity for boaters and fishermen because they’re a tremendous help with the reflective light coming off the water. Polarized lenses are also helpful for many bikers and professional drivers who have to deal with a lot of glare off hot roadways, bumpers, and windshields on sunny days. Polarized sunglasses ease eye strain and help protect your eye health in these types of situations, making them a great investment when you’re regularly exposing your eyes to these types of conditions.

When To Use Non-Polarized Glasses

If you’re looking for an affordable pair of glasses for casual use, non-polarized glasses can be a great fit. They have a low price tag and help shade your surroundings somewhat while providing UV protection in most cases. Non-polarized lenses are also more durable, so you won’t have to replace them as often.

If you’re troubled by sunglasses that make whites appear off-hue, you’ll probably be happier with non-polarized glasses than polarized ones. Individuals who often look at LCD screens may also prefer non-polarized glasses. They can make it easier to see your cell phone screen, LCD watch faces, and the infotainment system in your car.

While polarized lenses are great for sunny roads with a lot of glare, they’re not as good on roads where you’re actively looking for a particular type of glare. For example, icy roads often have a signature sheen that can alert you to slick spots. If you’re wearing polarized glasses, you won’t see the reflective glare, which can make it more difficult to navigate these areas. Non-polarized lenses are, therefore, a smarter choice for some types of winter driving in potentially hazardous conditions.

How To Tell If Lenses Are Polarized

In most cases, you will see a noticeable darkening or lightening of a polarized lens when you turn it 90 degrees in front of an LCD screen. The LCD screen emits light at a certain frequency, and rotating the lens of your sunglasses will significantly impact how much of that light comes through. If you have two lenses from a pair of polarized sunglasses and you hold them over top of one another at a 90-degree angle to each other, you’ll see a significant darkening effect because the lenses at opposing angles block light both vertically and horizontally.

Conclusion

Whether you opt for polarized or non-polarized glasses, prioritizing UV protection and eye comfort is paramount. By understanding the differences between these types of lenses and considering your lifestyle and preferences, you can make an informed decision to ensure optimal eye protection and visual clarity in any environment. Remember, investing in quality sunglasses is an investment in your eye health and overall well-being.

When it comes to sun protection, most people focus on shielding their skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. However, it’s equally crucial to pay attention to the well-being of our eyes. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV radiation can lead to serious eye conditions and even permanent damage. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of protecting your eyes from the sun and provide valuable insights into effective preventive measures. By prioritizing eye protection, you can safeguard your vision and enjoy a lifetime of healthy eyes.

Understanding Sun Exposure

UV Radiation: The sun emits invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation, consisting of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can damage the eyes and increase the risk of various eye conditions and diseases.

Ocular Damage: UV radiation can penetrate the eye's structures, including the cornea, lens, and retina, leading to cumulative damage over time. This damage can manifest as cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium, and photokeratitis (sunburn of the cornea).

The Importance of Eye Protection

Preventing Cataracts: UV exposure is a significant risk factor for the development of cataracts, a clouding of the eye's natural lens that can impair vision and require surgical intervention.

Reducing Macular Degeneration Risk: Chronic exposure to UV radiation is associated with an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

Minimizing Eye Surface Damage: UV radiation can cause damage to the delicate skin around the eyes, leading to premature aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer.

Sun Protection Strategies

Wear Sunglasses: Choose sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays and provide adequate coverage for the eyes and surrounding skin. Look for sunglasses labeled as UV400 or offer UV protection.

Use Wide-brimmed Hats: Pair your sunglasses with a wide-brimmed hat to provide additional shade and protection from overhead sunlight.

Seek Shade: Limit direct sun exposure, especially during peak UV hours (typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.), by seeking shade whenever possible.

Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration can help maintain ocular moisture and reduce the risk of dry eye symptoms exacerbated by sun exposure.

Regular Eye Exams: Schedule routine comprehensive eye exams with an optometrist or ophthalmologist to monitor eye health, detect early signs of UV-related damage, and receive personalized recommendations for eye care and protection.

Conclusion

By prioritizing sun protection for your eyes, you can mitigate the risk of UV-related eye damage and preserve your vision for a lifetime of optimal clarity and comfort. Embrace the light responsibly, and take proactive steps to safeguard your eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Remember, protecting your eyes today ensures a brighter, clearer future tomorrow.

A pair of shades on your face does more than look good. It also protects your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. That’s why it’s important to wear sunglasses throughout the year, whether it’s hot, cool, sunny, or cloudy outside. At Northeastern Eye Institute, we understand the importance of eye protection to help prevent optical damage. Let’s examine how you can choose the best sunwear for your needs.

Why Wear Sunglasses?

Over time, exposure to UV light can damage the lenses, corneas, retinas, and lids of the eyes. By regularly wearing sunglasses, you can prevent the onset of optical conditions such as:

Macular Degeneration

The macula is an interior area of the eyeball located at the center rear of the retina. Though small — measuring just 5 mm across — it plays an outsized role in central vision as well as the perception of colors and fine details. Long-term exposure to UV light can degenerate the macula, resulting in the loss of visual acuity.

Cataracts

Cataracts are a clouding of the optical lens of the eye, the risk of which increases with prolonged UV light exposure. Having cloudy lenses is much like looking through fogged-up glass. Unable to see clearly, you’re likely to struggle with ordinary activities like reading, watching television, and driving.

Pterygium

Pterygium refers to a growth that forms on the conjunctiva — the clear protective membrane over the whites of the eye — and extends into the cornea. Its primary cause is exposure to sunlight, particularly that which reflects off of snow or water.

Photokeratitis

Photokeratitis is like a sunburn, except that it affects the cornea. Exposure to harsh UV light is one of the primary causes of this condition, which can cause pain, photosensitivity, redness, and swelling. It’s typically temporary but can result in permanent damage if left untreated.

Eyelid Skin Cancers

All areas of the skin are susceptible to UV-related cancers, and the eyelids are no different. Without taking preventive measures, you may be at risk for conditions such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. Wearing protective eyewear keeps both your eyes and the surrounding skin safe from the sun’s radiation.

How To Choose the Best Sunglasses for Eye Protection

Selecting the right sunglasses is about more than finding attractive frames. There are numerous factors to consider to make sure you’re getting the best protective value possible.
Focus your search on UV 400 glasses, which block 99%-100% of both UVA and UVB light. UVA light, which has a longer wavelength, is capable of passing through the cornea and reaching the lens, causing conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. UVB light has a shorter wavelength and is principally responsible for sunburns and photokeratitis. Protection against both types of UV light can prevent such conditions from developing.
If you already suffer from macular degeneration or from a condition such as diabetic retinopathy, look for brown or amber-colored lenses. Compared to black shades, these colors provide better contrast, allowing you to see more clearly. Keep in mind that you still need a high UV rating, so skip the brown and amber if they aren’t rated UV 400.
For those who spend a large amount of time outdoors polarized sunglasses are worth considering. Polarization is a feature that reduces glare, which, in turn, offers enhanced protection against reflective light. This characteristic makes polarized lenses especially useful in areas with highly reflective surfaces, such as bodies of water, as well as for everyday activities like driving.
Already wear prescription eyewear? Glasses nowadays tend to offer some UV protection but not enough to offer reliable protection against the harshest light. Luckily, there are a couple of solutions available to you. The simplest is to get a pair of prescription sunglasses along with your regular glasses. You can wear the latter indoors but switch to the former when you go outside. Another option is to get one pair of glasses with photochromic lenses, which darken upon exposure to UV light — a convenient choice if you don’t want to bother with frequent swapping of your eyewear.
Finally, make sure you choose a style of sunglasses that you like. The more positively you feel about your shades, the more likely you are to wear them. If cost is a concern, look for a design that matches well with your wardrobe and general sense of style. That way, you can be sure that you look great while preserving your optical health.

Sunglasses for Children

If you have kids, keep their eyes protected, too. UV-related damage is cumulative, meaning that it builds up over time, so it’s never too early to take preventive measures. Also, UV sensitivity may be especially high for children’s eyes, making it all the more imperative to protect them.
At Northeastern Eye Institute, we have a dedicated team of eye doctors who specialize in pediatric eye care. We can help you educate your children on the importance of wearing protective eyewear and guide them as they select a pair of their own.

Tips for Maximum Eye Protection

To ensure that you get the most protective value out of your sunglasses, follow these tips:
• Wear them year-round: UV light is present on cool, cloudy days as much as it is on hot, sunny ones.
• Think bigger: Larger sunglasses, particularly wider ones, provide more coverage and, therefore, more protection.
• Think cheap: Pricier sunglasses aren’t necessarily more protective, and UV 400-protected glasses are often quite inexpensive.
• Double-check the protection: Take your sunglasses to an optical shop, eye doctor, or anyone else with a UV light meter to make sure that the UV rating on the label is accurate.

Polarized glasses have been popular with anglers and boaters for many years. It is only recently that polarized glasses caught on as a popular trend, however. Polarized glasses can dramatically reduce reflective glare, making it easier to see fine details in bright sunlight. However, it is important to understand the truth behind some of the rather grandiose claims regarding polarized glasses. Discover the myths and truths about polarized glasses.

Myth: Polarized Glasses Fully Block Glare

The concepts of glare and polarization are complicated, as are the interactions between the two. Normal light moves on many planes. When light waves bounce off of a reflective surface, however, they become polarized.

Polarized light moves mostly along one plane. A polarized filter most effectively blocks light that is polarized at a 90-degree angle with respect to the axis of the filter. More light is reflected and therefore polarized horizontally rather than vertically. Therefore, polarized sunglasses are vertically polarized. This drastically reduces horizontal glare.

However, the interrelationships between types of glare, polarization of both the glare and the filter, and the angle of the sun mean that polarized sunglasses will not effectively block all glare at all times.

Polarized sunglasses do maintain the traditional features of sunglasses. While your polarized glasses may not perform their polarization duties perfectly at all times, they will cut the brightness of ambient light. Polarized glasses cut the intensity of light by at least half. As with normal sunglasses, you can choose the level of darkness that you would like.

Myth: Polarized Glasses Are Expensive So They Must Be Good

Actually, price is no guarantee of quality.

Many very expensive polarized sunglasses do not meet industry standards for UV protection. Likewise, many inexpensive sunglasses are polarized and meet or exceed industry standards. Be sure to read the UV protection label on any sunglasses you are considering to see if the glasses are in compliance.

UV protection blocks dangerous ultraviolet light from reaching your eyes. Both UV-A and UV-B rays are harmful to the eyes as well as skin. Polarization does not block UV rays. A separate material must be added to polarized glasses to absorb the harmful radiation.

You will also need to ensure that the glasses you are considering are truly polarized. Many sunglasses have a test tag that you can use. Look through the glasses at the test tag, and then rotate the lenses 90 degrees. You should notice a significant darkening effect. If there is no test tag, look through two pairs of polarized glasses while rotating one pair 90 degrees. You should see an obvious blocking of light. Of course, most glasses are as advertised; but when paying extra for a particularly feature, it is good to be sure.

Myth: Polarized Glasses Help In Driving

This myth is basically true, depending on the angle of the sun. On bright, sunny days, the sun’s light reflects off the shiny metal of cars. Light also reflects off of the asphalt of many road surfaces. Polarized glasses can block some of the reflected light, reducing dangerous glare and making driving safer.

However, polarized sunglasses will have little effect when the sun is in certain positions in the sky.

Motorcycle riders should avoid polarized glasses. The polarized filter combined with the darkening effect can make it difficult to distinguish details of the road surface. An oil slick or other hazard is potentially dangerous and may go unnoticed by a motorcyclist wearing polarized sunglasses.

Myth: Polarized Sunglasses are Excellent for Snow Skiers

Polarized glasses have their pros and cons for skiers. The polarized filter can help to dramatically reduce snow glare, which is caused by the sun’s light reflecting off the bright snow. Snow glare can be almost blinding on bright days, and the polarized sunglasses can help a skier to see. However, the polarized filter combined with the darkening sunglasses effect can make it more difficult to distinguish details, particularly when looking down. As a snow skier must always concern himself with the details of the snow just ahead on his path, the polarization can actually be dangerous. A skier may be unable to distinguish patches of ice and small moguls.

Myth: Polarized Sunglasses Make it Difficult to See LCD displays

This myth is completely true. When the display is viewed from certain angles, it may actually disappear. This has to do with the nature of the liquid crystal display (LCD). The light is polarized in such a way that the polarized glasses can make it disappear entirely. Always remove your polarized glasses before using an ATM or other LCD display.

For this reason, pilots who rely on LCD instrumentation for safe flying should not wear polarized glasses.

Myth: Thicker Glasses Provide Better Polarization

Polarized sunglasses are popularly available in two thicknesses: .75 mm and 1.1 mm lenses. The thicker lenses provide greater impact resistance. However, the polarization filter on both sizes is the same. Choose impact resistance if you need it, but do not be misled about the quality of the glare reduction.

Myth: Polarized Glasses are Good for Those Who Suffer Light Sensitivity

Photochromic lenses, often called transitional lenses, are frequently prescribed for people who are sensitive to light. These lenses automatically adjust to changing light sources, darkening in bright light and lightening in low-light conditions without any effort by the wearer. Many of these lenses are polarized as well. Those who suffer from light sensitivity are often particularly sensitive to glare, which makes prescription-polarized glasses with photochromic lenses an excellent choice.

Myth: Polarized Glasses are Not Available to Those Who Need Bifocals

While true bifocals or trifocals are not available with polarized filters, there is another option. Bifocals and trifocals have recently been replaced with progressive lenses. Progressive lenses transition seamlessly through a range of magnifications. They achieve a more natural enhancement of vision than the older bifocals and trifocals, and are free of the telltale lines. Progressive lenses are available with a polarization option.

Myth: Polarized Sunglasses Allow Boaters to See Through Water

This is partially true.

Due to the nature of water’s reflection of light, polarized glasses can make it easier to see underwater objects. The polarizing filter is vertical, while most of the reflected light of the water’s surface is horizontally polarized. The polarized glasses, therefore, can dramatically reduce glare from the water.

Additionally, polarized glasses cut the reflected light from other objects such as rocks. The light below the water’s surface is polarized vertically, so the vertically polarized glasses make the water appear darker. However, the lack of reflected light makes the water seem more transparent. Of course, the angle of the sun affects the amount of light that is polarized, thus affecting the ability to see more clearly.

Polarized glasses are a widely popular option in today’s market. Polarized glasses are able to reduce glare and improve vision in bright conditions. However, like any other product, polarized glasses have their advantages and disadvantages. Take the time to become educated about the way polarized sunglasses work. By being an informed consumer, you will be able to decide whether polarized glasses are right for you.

The next time you get ready to head to the beach or ski slopes without protective eye gear, take a moment to remember that eyes can get sunburned the same way skin can.

Severely sunburned eyes are caused by overexposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays, like those emitted by the sun. This condition is known as photokeratitis.

Photokeratitis, or ultraviolet keratitis, is an inflammation of the cornea, which is the clear covering of the front of the eye.

Protecting your eyes from UV rays is the only way to avoid getting them sunburned. Over time, too much sun exposure can cause specific types of eye diseases to occur. These include:

These symptoms are temporary and should resolve on their own within 24 to 48 hours. If the symptoms last longer, see your eye doctor immediately.

While waiting for your eyes to recover you might want to:

Stay indoors and wear sunglasses to help with your increased light sensitivity.

Keep your eyes moist with preservative-free artificial tears.

Use OTC pain relievers to help with the pain and follow the recommended dosage.

DO NOT rub your eyes.

If you wear contact lenses, remove them immediately and stop wearing them until your eyes have returned to normal. You may find that placing a cool, damp cloth over your closed eyes is soothing.

When to be careful

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that your eyes are protected by blinking, or from not staring directly into the sun. UV rays can be intense in several different environments.

By water

Sun can reflect off of water and sand, causing UV exposure. This can occur in the following locations:

beach

lake

dock

boat

pool

anywhere the sun meets water

In the city

If you’re stuck in the city, don’t make the mistake of thinking you can go without the right gear.

Sunlight can also reflect off of buildings, cars, and concrete streets. And it doesn’t matter if it’s a bright sunny day or a hazy one. UV rays can affect your eyes and skin through cloud cover.

On the mountain

Sunlight can also reflect off of ice and snow. If you participate in sports such as mountain climbing, snowboarding, or skiing, you’re at risk for photokeratitis if you don’t protect your eyes. This type of photokeratitis is known as snow blindness.

In some instances, snow blindness can cause the corneal surface to freeze or become very dry. This condition is common in the North and South Poles, but can also happen at higher altitudes where the air is thin. Thinner air provides less protection from UV rays, making you more vulnerable than you may realize.

Artificial UV light

Other artificial sources of UV light include: arc welding machines and reptile basking bulbs — a type of UVB bulb used in pet stores and reptile enclosures.

You might think that tanning beds are safe for your eyes, since they emit UVA instead of UVB rays, but this is not accurate. Tanning beds produce up to 100 times the amount of UV rays that the sun does, and can be very dangerous for eyes. If you use tanning beds, it is imperative that you protect your eyes during use.

How to protect your eyes

Not all sunglasses are created equal. To ensure that your eyes get the protection they need, make sure your eyeglasses block or absorb 99 to 100 percent of UV rays. Wearing a brimmed hat can also help shield your eyes from sun exposure. When you’re skiing or enjoying other snow sports, wear sunglasses or goggles that provide this same level of protection. Wearing a helmet can also help.

Never use a tanning bed without wearing protective eye gear. Also try to keep your eyes closed as much as possible.

If you use welding equipment or similar types of machinery, wear a welding helmet designed to protect your eyes and face.

When to see a doctor

If the symptoms of sunburned eyes continue to plague you for more than a day or two, see your doctor. A specialist, such as an ophthalmologist or optometrist, can prescribe medication, if needed.

Remember, the longer your exposure to UV rays, the more likely you are to experience serious eye conditions over time, such as cataracts, or macular degeneration. If you have problems with your vision, see your doctor.

You should also see a doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

seeing halos

blurred, fuzzy, dim, or distorted vision

shadowy areas in the middle field of vision

sensitivity to glare or light

problems with night vision

Eyelids are a particularly vulnerable area of the body. They can get skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or malignant melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma in this area can also spread to the eye itself.

See a dermatologist if you notice any of these symptoms on your eyelid:

a discolored eyelid growth that appears red, black, or brown

breaks in the skin that do not go away, or changes in skin texture

swelling or thickening of skin

eyelash loss

The bottom line

Just like skin, your eyes are vulnerable to getting sunburned from too much exposure to UV rays. This condition, called photokeratitis, usually goes away on its own within a few days. In the short term, UV ray exposure and eye sunburn can cause uncomfortable symptoms.

In the long term, serious conditions, such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and eyelid cancer may result. It’s important to protect your eyes from the sun, and to take special care when you’re in high altitudes where air is thin, and UV rays are strong.
