Whether you’re heading back to work or study – it’s time to recharge, refresh and see things anew. Whatever 2025 has in store, we’ll make sure you and your family can see it coming. We can all relate to being overworked throughout the year but there is no benefit in letting your eyes feel the strain of a heavy load. Whether you spend your days indoors at a computer or outdoors exposed to damaging UV, new lens technologies and eyewear designed for your day-to-day activities will ensure you see clearly and comfortably, and remain protected throughout the year.

Better health is often on the agenda; eyesight is a critical component of that. As eye care professionals, we offer six simple, effective ways to ensure your eye health in 2026:

Know Your Family’s Eye Health History

Knowledge is power! Many eye diseases and conditions including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy have a genetic component and tend to run in families. Familiarize yourself with your family’s eye health history and share it with your eye doctor so you can catch any potential signs of disease early, when treatments are most effective.

Follow Proper Contact Lens Protocol

Remember the first time you tried contact lenses? It felt like a miracle to see so well, didn’t it? Contacts are certainly a convenient vision correction solution. But, if you don’t take care of them, they can cause serious problems. Follow your eye doctor’s instructions for proper care and wearing of your specific lenses. Don’t skimp on cleaning or storing lenses, and don’t wear them for longer than recommended. Failing to follow directions puts you at risk for infections, abrasions, and even permanent vision loss. Resolve to be contact-lens-compliant in 2025.

Eat Healthfully for Healthy Vision

Here’s a resolution that might dovetail with other healthy habits: eating right can help keep you seeing right. Getting the proper balance of nutrients; vitamins A, C and D; Omega-3 fatty acids; bioflavonoids and antioxidants plays a part in healthy vision. Studies show that a healthy diet can reduce the risk for age-related vision problems including macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma. Aim to incorporate more of these in your diet in 2025:

Red or orange peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, spinach, kale and other green, leafy vegetables (for beta-carotene and Vitamin C)

Tea, citrus fruits, cherries, berries and legumes (for bioflavonoids)

Tuna, mackerel, salmon, anchovies and walnuts (Omega-3 fatty acids)

Liver, beef, oysters and fortified dairy products (Vitamins A and D, zinc)

Utilize Safety Eyewear

Each day, emergency rooms across our country see about 2,000 eye injuries, according to Prevent Blindness America. That adds up to over 700,000 per year! There are also around 125,000 eye injuries that happen in and around the home, plus and 25,000 sports-related eye injuries each year—nearly half of which are to children under age 14. And while 10-20 of all of these injuries will cause temporary or permanent vision loss, a full 90 of them could be prevented by wearing the proper eye protection. You can keep your vision and that of your family and kids safe by wearing the right eye protection at work, at home, and while playing sports. Tell your eye care professionals about your lifestyle and we will recommend the ideal protection for your needs.

Wear Sunglasses 365 Days a Year

Just because it’s wintertime doesn’t mean the sun’s UV rays can’t harm your eyes. In fact, glare from the sun can be particularly harsh in winter, and UV rays reflecting off surfaces including snow, pavement, metal and water can damage your eyes year-round. UV exposure is associated with an increased risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Proper sunglasses will block at least 99 of both UVA and UVB rays. Our optical associates can help you select a great pair of sunglasses that will protect your eyes as they project your style. Find a pair you love and wear them every day to protect your eyesight!

Follow the 20/20/20 Rule

With screen time on tablets, phones, laptops and desktops at record high levels, many of us are hunching our shoulders and straining our eyes to catch up on the latest news and posts. This increased screen time can lead to Computer Eye Syndrome, characterized by tired eyes, blurry vision, difficulty focusing, dry eyes, headaches and shoulder or neck pain. To relieve the effects of Computer Eye Syndrome, follow the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes or so, give your eyes a break by looking at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. It’s a quick and easy way to relieve some of the strain screen time puts on our eyes.

Schedule A Comprehensive Eye Exam

Protect your precious gift of sight, and do the same for each member of your family. By scheduling a comprehensive eye exam, you can determine whether your vision is at its best, update prescription eyewear or contact lenses, determine the best safety glasses for your lifestyle, and be screened for many potential eye issues or diseases that could dramatically impact your vision. We’ll “see to it” that you get the best possible treatment to preserve your eyesight in this new year―and always!

In the United States, December is observed as “Safe Toys and Gifts Month” as a means for alerting us to the need to be careful when making our toy and gift choices, and to prompt us to keep in mind their safety and suitability. Knowing what to look out for can make a big difference in preventing possible injuries from well-intentioned gifts.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-6469 size-full" title="Safe Toys and Gifts Month" src="https://goldeneyeoptometry.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/christmas-tree.jpg" alt="Christmas tree Background. This observance encourages everyone to consider the age appropriateness and if the toys they wish to give suits the individual skills and abilities of the child who will receive it, especially for infants and children under age three. Shoppers may forget about safety factors when it comes to purchasing their children’s desired toys and gifts. Before making purchases, it is essential to examine the safety and age range of the toys you select.

This holiday season (and beyond), please consider the following guidelines for choosing safe toys for all ages:

Inspect all toys before purchasing. Avoid those that shoot or include parts that fly off. The toy should have no sharp edges or points and should be sturdy enough to withstand impact without breaking, being crushed, or being pulled apart easily.

When purchasing toys for children with special needs try to: Choose toys that may appeal to different senses such as sound, movement, and texture; consider interactive toys to allow the child to play with others; and think about the size of the toy and the position a child would need to be in to play with it.

Be diligent about inspecting toys your child has received. Check them for age, skill level, and developmental appropriateness before allowing them to be played with.

Look for labels that assure you the toys have passed a safety inspection – “ATSM” means the toy has met the American Society for Testing and Materials standards.

Gifts of sports equipment should always be accompanied by protective gear (give a helmet with the skateboard)

Keep kids safe from lead in toys by: Educating yourself about lead exposure from toys, symptoms of lead poisoning, and what kinds of toys have been recalled; being aware that old toys may be more likely to contain lead in the paint; having your children wash their hands frequently and calling your doctor if you suspect your child has been exposed to lead. Consult the last two websites listed below for more information.

Do NOT give toys with small parts (including magnets and “button” batteries which can cause serious injury or death if ingested) to young children as they tend to put things in their mouths, increasing the risk of choking. If the piece can fit inside a toilet paper roll, it is not appropriate for kids under age three.

Do NOT give toys with ropes and cords or heating elements

Do NOT give crayons and markers unless they are labeled “nontoxic”.

Once gifts are open:

Immediately discard plastic wrapping or other toy packaging before the wrapping and packaging become dangerous play things.

Keep toys appropriate for older children away from younger siblings.

Battery charging should be supervised by adults. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to young children. Pay attention to instructions and warnings on battery chargers. Some chargers lack any mechanism to prevent overcharging.

Giving your children a safe holiday season can be achievable by taking the proper precautions. You’ll be able to better protect your child from toy-related injuries by providing safe toys, environments, and adult supervision for when they open and play and with their toys.

By taking proper precautions, whether providing age-appropriate toys or proper protective eyewear, you can protect your child from injury. However, if your child should sustain an eye injury DO NOT allow child to rub or touch the eye, DO NOT apply medication to the eye, and DO NOT attempt to remove any debris from the eye. If the eye injury is caused by a chemical in the eye, flush the eye with water. For all eye injuries seek medical attention immediately.

We all want our children to be happy and healthy, and we want to protect them from harm. We can best achieve this goal by getting our children yearly wellness check-ups and eye examinations before school, as well as by providing safe toys, environments, and adult supervision.

WHY SAFE TOYS AND GIFTS MONTH IS IMPORTANT

It alerts us to choking hazards

Choking is a major risk for children when playing with toys — specifically when they're under 3 years old. Let's thoroughly inspect the level of choking risk for each toy we give.

It emphasizes child supervision

Toy manufacturers have come a long way in making their products safe for kids to enjoy. However, the best way to manage and reduce risk is to have an attentive adult watching.

We're more likely to pay attention

Buyers will want to make sure the toys have an American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) label. This means that the toy has met the national safety standards.

Winter brings chilly winds, cozy sweaters, and holiday cheer — but it can also bring a host of challenges for your eyes. Cold temperatures, dry air, and indoor heating systems can all contribute to uncomfortable and even unhealthy eye conditions. Whether you're spending time outd

oors in the snow or indoors by the fireplace, it's important to give your eyes the care they need during the colder months.

Here are practical tips for maintaining eye comfort during the winter:

1. Combat Dry Air with a Humidifier

Winter air is naturally drier, and indoor heating systems make it even worse. This lack of moisture can lead to dry, irritated eyes.

Tip:

Use a humidifier to restore moisture in your home or office.

Try to keep indoor humidity around 40-60% for optimal eye comfort.

2. Use Artificial Tears

Dry eye symptoms such as burning, itching, or a gritty sensation are common in winter.

Tip:

Keep lubricating eye drops (artificial tears) handy.

Avoid drops with preservatives if you use them frequently.

3. Shield Your Eyes from the Wind

Cold, gusty winds can quickly dry out your eyes and make them feel sore or watery.

Tip:

Wear wraparound sunglasses or ski goggles to block wind and protect against debris and UV rays.

4. Don’t Forget About UV Protection

Even in winter, UV rays can damage your eyes — especially when they reflect off snow.

Tip:

Choose sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection.

Polarized lenses can reduce glare from snow and ice.

5. Avoid Direct Heat Exposure

Sitting too close to fireplaces or heaters can worsen dry eye symptoms.

Tip:

Keep a safe distance from direct heat sources.

Position heat vents away from your face.

6. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration affects your entire body — including your eyes.

Tip:

Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, which can worsen dryness.

7. Take Regular Screen Breaks

Cold weather often means more time indoors — and more time looking at screens.

Tip:

Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Use blue light filters or glasses if screen time is prolonged.

8. Dress for Eye Protection

In cold and snowy conditions, exposed skin — including your eyelids — can become irritated.

Tip:

Wear scarves, hats, or face masks that protect your eyes without blocking your vision.

9. Schedule an Eye Exam

Winter is a great time to check in with your eye doctor, especially if you're experiencing ongoing discomfort.

Tip:

Get a comprehensive eye exam to rule out underlying conditions like chronic dry eye or allergies.

Final Thoughts

Your eyes work hard for you all year long — and they deserve a little extra love in the winter. With these simple habits, you can keep your eyes comfortable, moisturized, and protected no matter how cold it gets outside.

Don’t let winter weather keep your eyes from feeling their best!

The holiday season is often filled with joy, lights, and festive celebrations, but there's one condition that can put a damper on your cheer: Christmas Eye. Despite its festive name, Christmas Eye is far from merry. This painful eye condition, also known as Albury-Wodonga syndrome or seasonal corneal ulcer, is a serious issue that can turn your holiday season into a time of discomfort and pain.

What Is Christmas Eye?

Christmas Eye is a seasonal eye condition most commonly reported in Australia, particularly in the regions of New South Wales and Victoria. It typically occurs during the summer months, from November to January, which coincides with the Christmas season in the Southern Hemisphere. The condition is characterized by sudden onset of severe pain in one eye, often accompanied by redness, watering, and sensitivity to light.

Causes of Christmas Eye

The exact cause of Christmas Eye is still not completely understood, but it is believed to be linked to environmental factors. Researchers suspect that tiny, airborne particles from grasses, trees, or other vegetation may irritate the cornea—the clear, protective outer layer of the eye. The corneal abrasion caused by these particles can lead to intense pain and discomfort.

Some experts also suggest that the condition might be caused by insect activity, as certain insects, particularly flies, are more active during the warmer months. These insects might carry irritants or toxins that can cause corneal damage if they come into contact with the eye.

Symptoms of Christmas Eye

Christmas Eye is known for its sudden and intense symptoms, which can include:

Severe Eye Pain: This is the hallmark symptom of Christmas Eye. The pain is often described as a sharp, stabbing sensation in the affected eye.

Redness and Swelling: The affected eye becomes red and swollen, and the surrounding area may also be inflamed.

Watery Eyes: Excessive tearing is common, as the eye tries to flush out the irritant.

Light Sensitivity (Photophobia): Bright lights can be particularly painful for someone with Christmas Eye, making it difficult to be outdoors or even in well-lit rooms.

Blurred Vision: The irritation and swelling can lead to temporary blurred vision in the affected eye.

Treatment and Management

If you suspect you have Christmas Eye, it's important to seek medical attention promptly. An eye care professional can diagnose the condition and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include:

Topical Antibiotics: To prevent or treat any bacterial infection that could complicate the condition.

Lubricating Eye Drops: To help soothe the irritated cornea and provide some relief from dryness.

Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medication may be necessary to manage the intense pain.

Rest and Protection: Avoid rubbing the eye, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from bright lights and further irritation.

Prevention Tips

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent Christmas Eye, especially given its uncertain causes, some general tips can help reduce the risk:

Wear Protective Eyewear: If you're spending time outdoors in areas where the condition is common, consider wearing sunglasses or protective goggles to shield your eyes from potential irritants.

Be Cautious in Known Areas: If you're in a region where Christmas Eye is prevalent, be extra cautious during the peak season. Avoid activities that might expose your eyes to airborne particles or insects.

Maintain Eye Hygiene: Keep your hands clean and avoid touching your eyes, especially when outdoors.

Conclusion

Christmas Eye may sound like a jolly condition, but it’s anything but. The intense pain and discomfort associated with this eye problem can put a serious damper on your holiday festivities. If you experience any symptoms of Christmas Eye, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention. Early treatment can help alleviate pain and prevent complications, allowing you to enjoy the season with clear, healthy eyes.

Halloween is a time for spooky fun, creative costumes, and festive decorations. However, the excitement of the season can also bring some hidden risks, especially when it comes to your eyes. Whether you’re dressing up in a costume, carving pumpkins, or trick-or-treating in the dark, it’s important to take steps to protect your vision. Here are some essential Halloween eyecare safety tips to ensure your eyes stay safe while you enjoy the festivities.

1. Beware of Costume Contact Lenses

Costume contact lenses, also known as decorative or cosmetic lenses, are popular for creating dramatic Halloween looks. However, these lenses can pose serious risks if not used properly.

Get a Prescription: Even if you don’t need vision correction, costume lenses should always be prescribed by an eye care professional. Non-prescription lenses can cause infections, allergic reactions, or even damage your eyes permanently.

Avoid Cheap, Unregulated Lenses: Many costume lenses sold online or at novelty shops are not FDA-approved and may be made of substandard materials. Stick to reputable sources where you can ensure the lenses meet safety standards.

Practice Proper Hygiene: Before inserting or removing contact lenses, wash your hands thoroughly. Never share lenses with others, and follow your eye care provider’s instructions for cleaning and storing them.

2. Makeup and Face Paint Safety

Halloween makeup and face paint can help complete your costume, but they can also cause eye irritation or allergic reactions if not used carefully.

Choose Hypoallergenic Products: Opt for makeup and face paints labeled as hypoallergenic and safe for use around the eyes. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying it to your face to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction.

Avoid Glitter and Loose Powders: While glitter can add sparkle to your look, it can easily get into your eyes and cause irritation or scratches on the surface of the eye. Stick to makeup products specifically designed for use around the eyes.

Remove Makeup Carefully: At the end of the night, gently remove all makeup and face paint using a makeup remover safe for use around the eyes. Never go to bed with makeup on, as it can cause eye infections or irritation.

3. Pumpkin Carving Precautions

Carving pumpkins is a classic Halloween activity, but it can be dangerous if not done carefully, especially for your eyes.

Use Carving Kits: Specially designed pumpkin carving kits are safer than kitchen knives and include tools that are less likely to slip. Encourage children to draw their designs and let adults handle the carving.

Keep Your Hands Dry: Slippery hands increase the risk of accidents. Dry your hands and carving tools frequently to maintain a firm grip.

Wear Eye Protection: If you're using power tools or working with particularly tough pumpkins, consider wearing safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying debris.

4. Trick-or-Treating in the Dark

Darkness adds to the spooky atmosphere of Halloween, but it also increases the risk of eye injuries and accidents.

Use Reflective Materials: Incorporate reflective tape into your costume or carry a flashlight to make yourself more visible to drivers and others. Reflective gear helps prevent accidents, especially in poorly lit areas.

Choose Safe Accessories: Be cautious with props like swords, wands, or sticks that could poke or injure eyes. Opt for soft, flexible materials, and make sure children know to play safely.

Stay in Well-Lit Areas: Stick to well-lit streets and sidewalks while trick-or-treating. Avoid dark alleys, and carry a flashlight to help you see any obstacles or tripping hazards.

5. Fire and Flame Awareness

Many Halloween decorations involve candles, jack-o'-lanterns, and other open flames, which can be dangerous if not handled properly.

Use LED Candles: Replace traditional candles with LED alternatives in your jack-o'-lanterns and decorations. They’re just as spooky without the fire risk.

Keep Distance from Flames: If your costume includes flowing fabrics or flammable materials, be mindful of open flames. Keep a safe distance from candles, bonfires, and other fire sources.

6. Handling Eye Emergencies

Accidents can happen, and it’s important to know what to do if you or someone else experiences an eye injury.

Don’t Rub Your Eyes: If something gets in your eye, avoid rubbing it, as this can cause further damage. Instead, rinse your eye gently with clean water or saline solution.

Seek Immediate Help: For more serious injuries, such as cuts or punctures, or if something sharp has entered the eye, seek medical attention immediately. Do not attempt to remove any objects yourself.

Conclusion

Halloween is a time for fun and creativity, but it’s also important to stay safe—especially when it comes to your eyes. By following these Halloween eyecare safety tips, you can protect your vision and ensure that your spooky celebrations are memorable for all the right reasons. Whether you’re wearing costume lenses, applying makeup, or trick-or-treating in the dark, taking a few simple precautions will help keep your eyes safe and healthy during the festivities. Happy Halloween!

The holiday season is a time for celebration, joy, and gathering with loved ones. However, it's also a time when certain activities and traditions can pose unexpected risks to your eye health. From decorating your home to participating in festive activities, it's important to be aware of potential eye hazards and take steps to protect your vision. Here's a guide on how to keep your eyes safe during the holidays.

1. Decorating with Care

Holiday decorations add a festive touch to your home, but they can also pose risks to your eyes if not handled properly.

Christmas Trees and Ornaments: When setting up your Christmas tree, be mindful of sharp branches and fragile ornaments. Wear protective gloves when handling the tree to avoid getting poked in the eye by branches. Place breakable ornaments higher up on the tree to prevent children or pets from knocking them over.

Stringing Lights: Hanging holiday lights can be tricky, especially when working with ladders and tools. Always wear safety glasses when using nails or staples to secure lights, and be cautious when positioning lights around your home to avoid eye injuries.

Artificial Snow and Spray Foam: If you use artificial snow or spray foam for decorations, avoid spraying it near your face or eyes. The chemicals in these products can cause irritation or even chemical burns if they come into contact with your eyes.

2. Toy Safety

Gifting toys to children is a cherished holiday tradition, but it's important to choose toys that are safe for their age and avoid those that could cause eye injuries.

Avoid Sharp or Projectile Toys: Toys with sharp edges, small parts, or those that shoot projectiles (like BB guns or darts) can pose significant risks to children's eyes. Opt for age-appropriate toys that are safe for their developmental stage.

Monitor Playtime: Supervise young children while they play, especially when they’re using toys that could potentially cause injury. Encourage safe play habits and remind children not to aim toys at anyone's face.

3. Cooking and Kitchen Safety

The kitchen is often the heart of holiday gatherings, but it can also be a source of eye hazards if you're not careful.

Hot Liquids and Grease: Be cautious when cooking with hot liquids, grease, or oil. Splashes can easily happen, and if they land in your eyes, they can cause serious burns. Always use lids when frying or boiling, and consider wearing protective glasses if cooking large quantities.

Cutting and Chopping: When preparing food, use caution with knives and other sharp utensils. Keep your hands and cutting area dry to avoid slips, and never use dull knives, which can slip more easily and cause accidents.

4. Firework Safety

For some, fireworks are a part of holiday celebrations, especially around New Year's. However, fireworks are a common cause of eye injuries during the holidays.

Leave it to the Professionals: The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional display rather than setting off fireworks yourself. Professional displays are typically safer and provide better viewing experiences.

If Using Fireworks at Home: If you do choose to set off fireworks, follow all safety guidelines. Wear safety goggles, keep a safe distance, and never allow children to handle fireworks. Have water or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.

5. Protecting Against Dry Eyes

Cold weather, indoor heating, and exposure to wind during outdoor activities can all contribute to dry eyes, a common issue during the winter months.

Use a Humidifier: Keep a humidifier running in your home to add moisture to the air, which can help prevent dry eyes.

Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water and using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops can help keep your eyes moist and comfortable.

Wear Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from wind and UV rays when spending time outdoors by wearing sunglasses or goggles, especially if you're participating in winter sports like skiing or snowboarding.

6. New Year’s Eve Celebrations

New Year’s Eve often includes popping champagne and using confetti poppers—both of which can pose risks to your eyes.

Open Bottles Safely: When opening champagne bottles, keep the bottle pointed away from your face and others. The cork can fly off with great force, potentially causing serious eye injuries.

Avoid Confetti Poppers: While festive, confetti poppers can send small, high-velocity particles into the air that could injure your eyes. Use them with caution, or opt for safer alternatives like streamers or balloons.

Conclusion

The holiday season should be a time of joy, not eye injuries. By being aware of potential hazards and taking simple precautions, you can protect your eyes and enjoy a safe and festive holiday season. Remember, your vision is precious, and a few extra steps to safeguard it can ensure you have a happy and healthy holiday with your loved ones.

Follow our simple tips to keep your eyes and vision healthy in 2022.

Have a regular eye examination

Some eye conditions, such as glaucoma have no visible warning signs until your vision is severely damaged. A regular eye examination (even if you think your vision is fine) can help to identify these and other general health issues, such as diabetes, before you’re even aware that they exist.

Check your relatives eye history

Talk to your relatives about their eye health as some eye conditions have genetic links such as glaucoma or squints.

Be cool in the Sun

Protect your eyes when it is sunny or when you’re in high glare areas such as near snow or water. Cumulative UV exposure can increase your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. When choosing sunglasses, make sure they are safe, look out for the CE, UV 400 or British Standard Marks.

Look after your contact lenses properly

Make sure you look after your contact lenses properly. Thoroughly wash and dry your hands before touching your contact lenses or your eyes and only ever clean your contacts using the contact lens solutions recommended.

If you work with hazardous or airborne materials at work or home wear safety glasses or protective goggles to protect your eyes from injury.

Be screen smart

Although working at a computer won’t harm your eyes, sitting staring at a screen for long periods of time can cause screen fatigue – sore, itchy or tired eyes, headaches. It is important to take regular breaks and follow the 20,20,20 rule – every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.

Keep fit and healthy

Regular exercise is essential to stay fit and healthy and contributes to maintaining good eye health.

Eat Well

Protecting your eyes starts with the food you eat. Studies have shown that nutrients in omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamins C and E may help to prevent age-related problems, such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Foods containing eye-friendly nutrients include green leafy vegetables, oily fish such as salmon, eggs, wholegrains, chicken and citrus fruits.

Quit Smoking

If you smoke, then here’s another good reason to kick the habit – smoking is directly linked to blindness. Current smokers are four times more likely to develop macular degeneration (the UK’s leading cause of blindness) compared to past or non-smokers.

Avoid Dry Eyes

Eyes become dry, tired and sore if you are not producing enough tears or you have poor-quality tears. Central heating, air-conditioning and computer use can make it worse. Many adults suffer with dry eyes due to a health condition or medication. Lubricating eye drops can soothe irritation and reduce discomfort. Drink plenty of water and remember to blink often. If your eyes are persistently dry, tell your optometrist.

For any information or if you have any queries about your eye care, feel free to visit the practice – our friendly staff will be happy to answer any questions and advise you on keeping your eyes at the peak of health.

Summertime is time for fun and relaxation. But dangers can lurk around every swimming pool, campsite and barbeque.

Here are some things you should know on how to take care of your eyes during the summer months.

Summertime Danger #1: UV-rays Exposure

We all know that excessive sun exposure is bad for the skin, causing pre-mature aging and putting us at risk of skin cancers. But did you know that your eyes can be damaged as well?

Spending a lot of time in the sun can lead to eye problems later in life such as cataracts, macular degeneration or growths on the eye (including cancer). However, it can also cause immediate damage such as a very painful burn of the cornea.

The abovementioned problems are caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can be classified as UVA and UVB.

UVA rays can pass through cornea and reach inside the eye to damage the lens and retina. They are linked to the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration.

UVB rays affect us on the surface, causing wrinkles, sunburn and cancer (on both skin & eyes).

It is important to remember that UV rays penetrate through clouds so you are at risk even on hazy days. They also reflect off of surfaces such as water or sand, and this combined with direct exposure puts you at even greater risk.

So what can you do to protect yourself? It’s quite simple:

Wear a wide brimmed hat whenever you are outside, it will protect your eyes and your face.

Wear sunglasses with UV filter to limit the amount of UV rays reaching your eyes: the wraparound kind and protecting from 100% UV rays are the best.
* Not sure if your sunglasses are protecting you well enough? Ask your optician or eye doctor to test them for you.

Never look directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, to avoid immediate harm to your eyes.

Get your car windows tinted so that the harsh summer sun doesn’t hurt your eyes while you drive (it will keep your car cooler too).

Do you wear prescription glasses? Then you should get a pair of prescription sunglasses to protect your eyes without sacrificing good eyesight.

Summertime Danger #2: Physical Injuries

The less obvious hazards to your eyes are summertime chores such as mowing the lawn or house renovations. You never know when something like a wood chip or a stone could hit your eye, causing irritation or even a cut in the eye (which could blind you!) You should also be careful when playing sports that involve small flying objects, such as badminton, paintball or baseball.

So what can you do?

Wear protective goggles! They may be uncomfortable or unattractive but better this than a visit to the ER with a stick poking out of your eye (ouch). You can easily find safety goggles at Home Depot for as cheap as $3.

And if you really don’t want to wear protective glasses, then at least put on good quality sunglasses. You don’t want to learn this the hard way after a visit to the ER.

Summertime Danger #3: Swimming

It is summertime and the temperatures tempt many of us to dive into a pool, lake or ocean to cool off. It feels great, but keep in mind that you should shield your eyes from whatever may be in the water.

If you enjoy diving in the water, it’s preferable if you wear swimming goggles. They are very inexpensive, for under $10 you can get a pair that will save your eyes from the harshness of chlorine or the sting of saltwater.

Be especially wary of public pools. You don’t know if they are being properly maintained nor who does what in them (such as pee… yuck!). If your eyes sting after swimming in a pool, then rinse them with clean water and don’t go back in as the chemicals in the water may not be balanced properly.

Avoid wearing contact lenses when swimming in pools or lakes since the dirty water can increase your chance of eye infection as it may get stuck under the lens. Plus you may lose the lens. So make sure to use swimming goggles or snorkel mask – your eyes will thank you for it.

You must wear sunglasses to protect your eyes when you are on the beach, since as previously mentioned, UV rays reflect off of water and sand to give your extra UV ray exposure

I hope this brief article helps to keep you safe this summer. Thank you for taking the time to read it. Enjoy summer!
