Swimming is a fantastic way to stay fit and enjoy the outdoors, but it can also pose some risks to your eye health. Whether you’re diving into a chlorinated pool, splashing in the ocean, or floating in a lake, understanding how swimming can affect your eyes is essential. In this blog, we’ll explore the potential eye-related issues that can arise from swimming, tips for protecting your eyes, and best practices for eye care in aquatic environments.

1. The Impact of Chlorine and Water on Eye Health

a. Chlorine Irritation

Chlorine is commonly used to disinfect swimming pools, but it can irritate the eyes, leading to:

Redness and Itching: Chlorine can cause dryness and irritation, leading to redness, itching, or a burning sensation.

Dry Eyes: Prolonged exposure to chlorinated water can strip the natural moisture from your eyes, causing discomfort and dry eye symptoms.

b. Saltwater Exposure

Swimming in the ocean comes with its own set of challenges for your eyes:

Salt Irritation: Saltwater can also lead to dryness and irritation, especially if you accidentally get it in your eyes.

UV Exposure: While swimming, you are often exposed to harmful UV rays, which can lead to conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration over time.

c. Bacteria and Other Contaminants

Lakes, rivers, and hot tubs can harbor various bacteria and pathogens that may pose risks to your eyes:

Infections: Waterborne bacteria can lead to eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or more severe conditions like keratitis, particularly in contact lens wearers.

Microbial Keratitis: This is a serious infection of the cornea that can occur when contaminated water comes into contact with the eyes, especially if you're wearing contact lenses while swimming.

2. Protecting Your Eyes While Swimming

a. Wear Goggles

Investing in a good pair of swimming goggles can help protect your eyes from chlorinated water and other irritants. Here are some tips for choosing and using goggles:

Fit: Ensure the goggles fit snugly but comfortably around your eyes to prevent water from seeping in.

Anti-Fog: Look for goggles with an anti-fog coating to keep your vision clear while swimming.

UV Protection: If swimming outdoors, consider goggles that offer UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful rays.

b. Use Eye Drops

If you frequently experience dryness or irritation after swimming, consider using lubricating eye drops before and after your swim to help maintain moisture.

c. Rinse Your Eyes After Swimming

After swimming, rinse your eyes with clean, fresh water to remove any chlorine or salt residue. This can help minimize irritation and reduce the risk of infections.

d. Avoid Swimming with Contact Lenses

If you wear contact lenses, it's best to avoid swimming with them in. If you do choose to swim with lenses, opt for daily disposables that you can discard after swimming to reduce the risk of infection.

3. Recognizing Symptoms and Seeking Help

After swimming, if you experience any of the following symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention:

Persistent Redness: If your eyes remain red for an extended period after swimming.

Severe Pain or Discomfort: If you experience significant pain, sensitivity to light, or changes in vision.

Discharge: If you notice discharge or crusting around your eyes, which could indicate an infection.

4. Best Practices for Swimming and Eye Care

a. Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for maintaining eye moisture. Drink plenty of water before and after swimming.

b. Limit Swimming Time

If you notice your eyes are particularly sensitive, consider limiting the amount of time you spend in the water, especially in chlorinated pools.

c. Regular Eye Exams

Schedule regular eye exams to monitor your eye health. Inform your eye care professional about your swimming habits, as they can provide tailored advice for protecting your eyes.

5. Conclusion

Swimming is an enjoyable and healthy activity, but it’s crucial to take steps to protect your eyes from potential irritants and infections. By wearing goggles, practicing good hygiene, and staying vigilant about your eye health, you can continue to enjoy swimming while minimizing the risks to your eyesight. Remember, if you experience any persistent symptoms, don’t hesitate to consult with an eye care professional to ensure your eyes stay healthy and happy!

Watching television in the dark is a habit many people enjoy, especially when binge-watching a favorite show or settling in for a movie night. However, you may have heard warnings that watching TV in the dark can be harmful to your eyes. Is there truth to this, or is it just another myth? Let’s explore how watching television in the dark can impact your eyes and what you can do to minimize any negative effects.

Understanding Eye Strain

One of the primary concerns with watching television in a dark room is the potential for eye strain. When you watch TV in low light, your eyes are forced to constantly adjust between the bright screen and the dark surroundings. This adjustment, known as accommodation, can cause your eyes to work harder, leading to symptoms of eye strain.

Symptoms of Eye Strain

Eye strain, also known as asthenopia, can manifest in several ways, including:

Headaches: The extra effort your eyes exert can lead to tension headaches, particularly around the temples and forehead.

Dry or Watery Eyes: Staring at a bright screen in a dark room can reduce your blink rate, leading to dry eyes, or cause your eyes to overcompensate by producing more tears.

Blurred Vision: Prolonged viewing can cause temporary blurriness as your eyes struggle to focus properly.

Eye Discomfort: You might feel a general sense of discomfort or fatigue in your eyes after extended periods of watching TV in the dark.

The Role of Contrast and Brightness

In a dark room, the contrast between the bright TV screen and the dark environment is more pronounced. This high contrast can make it more difficult for your eyes to adjust, leading to discomfort. Modern televisions, with their vibrant colors and high-definition displays, can intensify this effect, making eye strain more likely.

Long-Term Effects on Eye Health

While watching TV in the dark can cause temporary discomfort, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that it causes permanent damage to your eyes. However, repeated exposure to eye strain can exacerbate underlying issues, such as myopia (nearsightedness) or dry eye syndrome.

Tips for Reducing Eye Strain

If you enjoy watching TV in the dark but want to protect your eyes, here are some tips to help reduce eye strain:

Ambient Lighting: Keep a low-level light on in the room to reduce the contrast between the TV screen and the surrounding environment. A small lamp behind or beside the television can help.

Adjust TV Settings: Lower the brightness of your TV screen to a comfortable level that matches the ambient lighting in the room. Many TVs have a "night mode" or "eye comfort mode" that automatically adjusts brightness based on the time of day.

Take Breaks: Follow the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This can help reduce eye strain and give your eyes a chance to relax.

Maintain a Comfortable Distance: Sit at a reasonable distance from the TV screen. The general rule of thumb is to sit about 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal screen size away from the TV.

Blink Frequently: Make a conscious effort to blink more often, which can help prevent dry eyes while watching TV.

Conclusion

Watching television in the dark can lead to temporary eye strain and discomfort, but it is unlikely to cause permanent damage to your eyes. By making simple adjustments to your viewing environment and habits, you can enjoy your favorite shows and movies without putting unnecessary strain on your eyes. Remember, taking care of your eyes is essential for maintaining long-term visual health, so be mindful of your viewing habits and make changes as needed to keep your eyes comfortable and healthy.

Do you still look tired after a full night of sleep? Do you hate breaking out the mascara when your eyes look swollen? “Why are my eyes puffy?” is a question you’re probably asking yourself.

Read on to learn more about some causes of puffy eyes and what you can do about the problem.

What Causes Puffy Eyes?

Puffy eyes have many different root causes. If you notice swelling around your eye area, it usually means you have fluid build-up, called periorbital edema. These are some possible causes.

Fatigue – Puffy, swollen eyes make you look tired – and with good reason. A common cause of puffy eyes is a lack of sleep.

Blockage – Your eyes may swell because lymph fluid or blood vessels get blocked and fluid can’t drain out. Something might be blocking the ducts around your eye socket. Talk to a doctor about methods of lymphatic drainage.

Dry Eyes – When your eyes are dry, the tissue gets irritated and swells. A dry eye might mean your home is too hot, or that you’re not blinking enough.

Salty Food – A diet high in sodium can lead to water retention. Some of this fluid can collect under your eyes.

Health Issues – Some health conditions can make your eyes swell up. If the swelling doesn’t go away within 48 hours, see your eye doctor.

Can an Allergic Reaction Cause Puffy Eyes?

Bad enough that allergies can cause sneezing, itchy eyes, and trouble breathing. But allergic irritation can also make your eyes swell, too. Puffy eyes might also be one of the early symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Allergy symptoms in your eyes include puffiness that’s worst in the morning, itching or burning, and tearing. Also, your blood vessels might expand, which makes your eyes look bloodshot.

If the swelling is limited to your eye area, you might have seasonal pollen allergies. If your entire face swells, you are likely having an allergic reaction. And swelling in just one eye, or swelling of your eyelid skin, could be from an insect bite.

Puffy eyes from seasonal allergies are annoying. Protect your eyes from allergens by staying inside when pollen counts are high. If you notice swelling, see your doctor.

If your symptoms are severe, a doctor can recommend a good allergy treatment.

If you’re allergy-prone, eyelid swelling and puffiness may be a regular occurrence.

But you can help reduce puffy eyes by keeping your allergies under control with the help of your doctor.

Note: An allergic reaction might be a medical emergency. If you experience rapid swelling of the eyes or any other part of your body, seek medical treatment.

What Causes Dark Circles Under Your Eyes?

Dark circles and puffy eyes often go together. They’re both unsightly and they both make you look exhausted – even when you aren’t! Under eye dark circles or puffy “bags,” have many causes:

The skin around your eyes is thinner than other skin. That means your blood vessels are more visible. When you’re tired, dark circles are more visible, too.

Some people are born with naturally dark circles and darker pigmentation under the eyes.

Swelling around your eyes can also cause dark circles. That’s because the swelling makes blood pool under your eyes.

Dark circles and puffy eyes share some causes, like allergies and aging. So, now the question becomes…

What are Some Effective Home Remedies for Puffy Eyelids?

Want to improve the appearance of unsightly puffy, swollen eyelids? Certain home remedies might help. Common household items can soothe the irritated blood vessels and connective tissues around your eyes.

Some home remedies that help puffy eyes are also effective with dark circles. A full night of sleep may be all you need to help reduce symptoms.

Caffeinated eye cream may help puffy eyes. An eye doctor or dermatologist may help you find a treatment cream that works for you.

Tea bags are a natural source of caffeine for your eyes. This chemical shrinks blood vessels to help reduce swelling. Try putting cool tea bags directly on your puffy eyes for a few minutes.

An eye massage can provide relief for irritated, puffy eyes. Hold a warm water compress to your eye for five minutes. Then gently massage both the upper eyelid and lower eyelid with clean fingers.

Cucumbers on the eyes aren’t just for show at a fancy spa. Cucumber slices can help reduce swelling in your eyes. They’re also high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that can help boost tired skin.

Be careful when applying anything to your eye area. Products that are healthy and soothing for your face and eyelid skin might be irritating if they get in your eyes. Focus on keeping the area around the eye healthy, instead.

NOTE: Some people believe hemorrhoid cream can reduce puffiness because it will constrict blood vessels. But it can also cause irritation and might make the puffiness worse. Stick with other tried-and-true home remedies, and keep hemorrhoid cream off of your face.

Preventing Puffy Eyes

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That’s true when it comes to puffy eyes, too. You can practice good eye and skin care to help keep puffy eyes from appearing in the first place.

Sleep More

Sometimes, relief from puffy eyes is as simple as getting a good night’s sleep. To optimize your sleeping conditions, make sure your room is dark and quiet, and try not to drink caffeine or alcohol close to bedtime.

Reduce Salt

Sodium can make your body retain water and other fluid, which can lead to swelling in the tissues around your eyes.

To cut back on salt, cook your own meals. The average American gets 70% of their salt intake from processed food. Low-salt diets have other benefits, like helping you maintain healthy blood pressure.

Cool Off

Turn down the heat, which can cause dry eyes. And dry eyes can become puffy. If you make your home cooler, you’re less likely to wake up with swollen eyes.

Also, drink plenty of cold water throughout your day. Dehydration can cause your body to retain water – including under your eyes.

With a few small lifestyle changes, you may be able to cut back on your number of puffy eye days! Sleep, water, and a healthy diet will work wonders for your health.

Getting Rid of Puff

Puffy, swollen eyes are bound to happen from time to time. That doesn’t mean you have to accept them. If you’re concerned about puffy eyes and you’re experiencing the problem regularly, it’s time to talk to your doctor.

Feeling like something is in the eye

Itchy eyes

Red (bloodshot) eyes

Swollen eyelid

Tearing

An eye allergy can be triggered by the same things that cause hay fever, such as:

Pollen

Dust

Pet dander

Certain medications or contact lenses can also be triggers.

Types of Allergy Eyedrops

Your doctor may first suggest you take these steps:

Use artificial tears.

Place a cold cloth on the eyes.

Avoid your allergy triggers.

Which type of allergy eyedrop you use depends on:

The cause of your allergy

Your symptoms

How much the symptoms affect your daily activities

If you really want to get rid of the eye related symptoms, one of the best options is to use eye drops for allergies that have an antihistamine ingredient to deal with the overload of histamine release that your body is giving you. A lot of seasonal allergies will come with a lot of Eye Allergy Symptoms that feel like a head cold: watery eyes, congestion, and a runny nose.

The reason these Eye Allergies Symptoms often appear together is that they're both caused by the same type of allergen. An Eye Allergy is usually called allergic conjunctivitis, which basically means that the conjunctiva, a thin layer of skin on the eye, is reacting to an airborne irritant.

The inner lining of your nose has the exact same type of skin layer, and as such they both tend to react at the same time. Most people have a common pollen allergy. This is when the pollen released from flowers Eye Allergies Causes an allergic reaction.

Certain times of year, such as late spring, are full of flower pollen, which is when most people experience symptoms. Other allergens crop up at different times of year. Weed pollen, for example, is usually around more in the early autumn months.

If you're allergic to pet dander or something that doesn't cycle throughout the year, there's a chance that you could be afflicted all year long. There are a lot of indoor allergens that a lot of people aren't aware of, and as a result they just think they happen to get sick a lot. A lot of people have allergies to mold and mildew, which can grow in some corner of your house without you even knowing it's there.

This can then lead to a chronic allergic response where you always feel at least some symptoms of your Eye Allergies.

The first step is of course to remove all potential allergens from your house, and in the meantime you can use eye drops for allergies to alleviate your symptoms a bit. Chronic allergic reactions have the potential to damage your eyes, so getting rid of everything that might be causing your allergies to flare up is the best way to Protect Your Eyesight.

Side Effects and Risks

As with any medicine, you should always follow the recommended instructions on the label. You shouldn’t use over-the-counter eyedrops for more than 2 to 3 days. If you use them for longer than that, it can make matters worse.

If you have an eye infection or glaucoma, you shouldn’t use eyedrops. Talk to your doctor about other options.

Some eyedrops may sting or burn when you place them in your eyes. It can help to store them in your fridge.

You can’t use many eyedrops while you wear contact lenses. Your doctor may tell you to remove your lenses before you use the drops and wait at least 10 minutes before you put them back in. Or you may not be able to wear contact lenses at all during treatment with eyedrops.

Your doctor might prescribe some prescription eye drops for allergies, which will usually have either an antihistamine or an anti-inflammatory, especially if you've been experiencing some swelling along with your other symptoms. Remember that there are ways to fight allergies.

and peaks at night. Your dry eyes may have kept you from attending a special evening out or joining friends after work. Fortunately, you may not have to live with dry eye pain at night and miss out on fun activities any longer.

This article explores the causes of eye dryness at night and the steps you can take to reduce or rid yourself of the nuisance. Before going into the specifics of night dryness, let’s look at what can cause eye dryness.

What causes dry eye disease?

The causes of recurring dry eyes vary widely. A common underlying factor of dry eyes involves tears – not making enough of them, having poor tear quality or rapid tear evaporation. With each blink, the underside of your eyelid spreads moisture over the cornea. If there aren’t enough tears, your cornea gets dry and irritated.

There’s also a connection between dry eyes, inflammation and metabolic disorders according to a published study by the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health. The results suggest that adult females with metabolic disorders may also have dry eye syndrome.

Another dry eye disorder is called “nocturnal lagophthalmos”; it’s the inability to close eyelids completely during sleep. This is caused by facial palsy, deformity of the lid or incomplete healing from eyelid surgery. Because the surface of the eye is exposed during the night it becomes dry.

Health conditions that cause dry eye

Health disorders can also result in dry eyes, including Sjorgen disease, Sarcoid disease, diabetes, thyroid problems and sleep apnea. Some women experience dry eyes due to hormonal changes associated with menopause.

The American Optometric Association (OAO) notes that aging, and taking certain medications including antihistamines, decongestants and blood pressure drugs, can cause dry eyes.

LASIK surgery and long-term contact lens use can also contribute to dry eyes.

Environmental factors associated with dry eye

Working or living in a smoky, dry environment can also cause tears to evaporate rapidly and dry the surface of your eyes. Computer use can also make your eyes drier because you may not blink as often when looking at a computer screen, causing rapid tear evaporation.

Why do my eyes feel drier at night?

After using them all day, your eyes are naturally dried out. But, there are other causes.

One theory involves how the body’s metabolism changes at night. Body temperature drops one to two degrees as bedtime nears, and metabolism slows during sleep. Because body functions slow, blood circulation slows and there are fewer nutrients reaching the eye and fewer tears being produced.

As mentioned earlier, incomplete eyelid closure during sleep can also contribute to dry, irritated eyes.

Natural remedies for dry eyes at night

There are many over-the-counter remedies that relieve the irritation of dry eyes at night. Also, if you address the symptoms related to dryness during the day, you can limit the irritation of dry eyes at night.

Start with lubricating tears, gels and ointments. Follow the instructions carefully. If you’d like to help preserve moisturizing tears at night, choose a viscous eye gel that is meant to coat the eye at night. The thickness could interfere with clear vision and should be applied at bedtime.

If dryness is caused by eyelids that don’t close completely, a barrier, such as a sleep mask or eye seal, can help to retain moisture on the cornea. Lifestyle changes can help prevent dry eyes, such as limiting computer time before bed. You can also put a humidifier in several rooms in the house, including your bedroom, to add moisture to the environment.

Medical treatment for dry eyes

If you’re not able to get fast relief from do-it-yourself methods, consult a medical professional. In fact, it may be best to consult your eye doctor first to identify the cause of dry eye, particularly if it’s an on-going issue.

Your eye doctor may prescribe medication, and for severe conditions, your ophthalmologist may recommend other dry eye treatment options, such as punctal plugs inserted into the tear ducts to keep the tears from draining out of the eye.

Dry eye symptoms are often a result of insufficient tear production, or tear films that evaporate too quickly. This condition, which can be chronic, can affect anyone but is prevalent among women and the elderly.

Dry eye causes and risk factors can vary, too. Some suffer from it due to their environment, while some are simply born with structural problems in their eyes.

As dry eye causes vary widely, symptoms and treatment for dry eyes may also differ. Two people with Dry Eye Syndrome may not have the same set of symptoms nor will they experience relief with the same set of treatments.

It’s important to learn different early dry eye symptoms, what can be done for relief, and when to visit the doctor to avoid complications.

Dry Eye Symptoms – Mild, Moderate, Severe

Keep in mind that dry eye symptoms may not appear all at once. They usually occur gradually and if they’re not permanent, they may last from hours to days. The most common symptoms responsible for the pain and discomfort associated with dry eyes are:

Mild symptoms

Sandy or gritty feeling in the eye as the day progresse

Feeling of something foreign in the eye

Stinging or burning sensation

Redness and swelling

Excessive blinking

Uncomfortable contact lenses

Moderate symptoms

Eye pain

Excessive tearing

Eye fatigue

Eyelid twitching

Heavy eyelids

Severe symptoms

Inability to cry

Episodes of vision fluctuation

Incapacitated difficulty reading, working in front of the screen, or any activity that calls for sustained visual attention

Untreated dry eye can damage the cornea (keratitis) and cause permanent scarring. Scarred corneas are more vulnerable to infection and ulceration, which in turn increases the risk of vision loss.

Factors Associated With Dry Eye Syndrome

A number of factors can increase your risk of dry eyes. These include:

Computer use. When working at a computer or using a smartphone or other portable digital device, we tend to blink our eyes less fully and less frequently, which leads to greater tear evaporation and increased risk of dry eye symptoms.

Contact lens wear. Though it can be difficult to determine the exact extent that contact lens wear contributes to dry eye problems, dry eye discomfort is a primary reason why people discontinue contact lens wear.

Aging. Dry eye syndrome can occur at any age, but it becomes increasingly more common later in life, especially after age 50.

Menopause. Post-menopausal women are at greater risk of dry eyes than men of the same age.

Indoor environment. Air conditioning, ceiling fans and forced air heating systems all can decrease indoor humidity and/or hasten tear evaporation, causing dry eye symptoms.

Outdoor environment. Arid climates and dry or windy conditions increase dry eye risks.

Frequent flying. The air in the cabins of airplanes is extremely dry and can lead to dry eye problems, especially among frequent flyers.

Smoking. In addition to dry eyes, smoking has been linked to serious eye problems, including macular degeneration, cataracts and uveitis.

Health conditions. Certain systemic diseases — such as diabetes, thyroid-associated diseases, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome — contribute to dry eye problems.

Medications. Many prescription and nonprescription medicines — including antihistamines, antidepressants, certain blood pressure medications and birth control pills — increase the risk of dry eye symptoms.

Eyelid problems. Incomplete closure of the eyelids when blinking or sleeping — a condition called lagophthalmos, which can be caused by aging or occur after cosmetic blepharoplasty or other causes — can cause severe dry eyes that can lead to a corneal ulcer if left untreated.

Complications
People who have dry eyes may experience these complications:

Eye infections. Your tears protect the surface of your eyes from infection. Without adequate tears, you may have an increased risk of eye infection.

Damage to the surface of your eyes. If left untreated, severe dry eyes may lead to eye inflammation, abrasion of the corneal surface, corneal ulcers and vision loss.

Decreased quality of life. Dry eyes can make it difficult to perform everyday activities, such as reading.

What Can I Do For Dry Eye Relief?

When treating dry eyes, it’s best to treat or manage the underlying cause. For instance, if the symptoms are a result of your constant exposure to irritants, reduce or eliminate your exposure to these irritants.

While you’re still figuring out the underlying cause of your mild dry eye symptoms, the following measures can offer relief.

Use lubricating eye drops and/or artificial tears. Artificial tears and other over-the-counter eye drops for dry eyes are available in varying viscosity and with different ingredients, depending on what’s missing from your tears.

Apply warm, moist compresses to the eye area twice daily to open blocked glands. This will promote the release of natural oils into the tear film and eventually encourage lubrication.

Avoid dry, arid climates when you can. Wear sunglasses with wrap around frames if you can’t avoid drying winds. This will help slow down tear evaporation.

Blink often and take breaks in between work that requires sustained vision for long hours.

Put your humidifier to good use during winter as it helps moisten the air. Winters are dryer than summers.

Reduce the number of hours you wear your contact lenses.

Switch to another medication if your dry eye symptoms are proven to be a side effect of your existing prescription drugs.

When to Get Help for Dry Eye

Schedule an appointment with your eye doctor or general physician if you experience any of the aforementioned moderate or severe symptoms.
A general doctor can check if the problem is caused by an underlying condition. If it has something to do with structural or functional eye problems, your doctor will refer you to an eye specialist.

Recommended Treatments for Dry Eye Syndrome

Next to eye drops and lubricants, moderate to severe dry eye symptoms can be managed and treated with the following:

Silicone or acrylic punctal plugs can be plugged into tiny, circular holes in your upper and lower eyelids through a simple procedure. This will help keep the tears from evaporating.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is growing in popularity. When eye drops, warm compresses, and other treatments don’t do the trick, IPLis a modern solution for those suffering from chronic dry eyes. Using quick bursts of light on the lower eyelids and upper cheek areas, IPLheats up the eyelid glands that might be blocked with stagnant secretions. Although many patients notice improvement after a single treatment, monthly (or maintenance) treatments are sometimes necessary.

Medications such as anti-inflammatory drops, gelling agents, oil-based drops, steroid eye drops, serum eye drops, and bicarbonate drops may be prescribed by your eye doctor. These medications can either reduce inflammation (if it’s the underlying cause) or encourage tear production.

If you believe you currently suffer from any of the dry eye symptoms mentioned here, take the next step. Why not schedule a consultation with one of our eye specialists today?

Follow our simple tips to keep your eyes and vision healthy in 2022.

Have a regular eye examination

Some eye conditions, such as glaucoma have no visible warning signs until your vision is severely damaged. A regular eye examination (even if you think your vision is fine) can help to identify these and other general health issues, such as diabetes, before you’re even aware that they exist.

Check your relatives eye history

Talk to your relatives about their eye health as some eye conditions have genetic links such as glaucoma or squints.

Be cool in the Sun

Protect your eyes when it is sunny or when you’re in high glare areas such as near snow or water. Cumulative UV exposure can increase your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. When choosing sunglasses, make sure they are safe, look out for the CE, UV 400 or British Standard Marks.

Look after your contact lenses properly

Make sure you look after your contact lenses properly. Thoroughly wash and dry your hands before touching your contact lenses or your eyes and only ever clean your contacts using the contact lens solutions recommended.

If you work with hazardous or airborne materials at work or home wear safety glasses or protective goggles to protect your eyes from injury.

Be screen smart

Although working at a computer won’t harm your eyes, sitting staring at a screen for long periods of time can cause screen fatigue – sore, itchy or tired eyes, headaches. It is important to take regular breaks and follow the 20,20,20 rule – every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.

Keep fit and healthy

Regular exercise is essential to stay fit and healthy and contributes to maintaining good eye health.

Eat Well

Protecting your eyes starts with the food you eat. Studies have shown that nutrients in omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamins C and E may help to prevent age-related problems, such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Foods containing eye-friendly nutrients include green leafy vegetables, oily fish such as salmon, eggs, wholegrains, chicken and citrus fruits.

Quit Smoking

If you smoke, then here’s another good reason to kick the habit – smoking is directly linked to blindness. Current smokers are four times more likely to develop macular degeneration (the UK’s leading cause of blindness) compared to past or non-smokers.

Avoid Dry Eyes

Eyes become dry, tired and sore if you are not producing enough tears or you have poor-quality tears. Central heating, air-conditioning and computer use can make it worse. Many adults suffer with dry eyes due to a health condition or medication. Lubricating eye drops can soothe irritation and reduce discomfort. Drink plenty of water and remember to blink often. If your eyes are persistently dry, tell your optometrist.

For any information or if you have any queries about your eye care, feel free to visit the practice – our friendly staff will be happy to answer any questions and advise you on keeping your eyes at the peak of health.

Skin isn’t the only organ that can feel the effects of cold weather. Here’s how to pamper your peepers.

Just as cold weather can dry out skin and make it itchy and uncomfortable, it can do the same to another part of body: the eyes.

During the winter months, the air — outside and indoors — is typically dry. The lack of moisture makes the surface of the eyes drier and causes irritation, itching and discomfort. People who wear contact lenses or those with chronic allergies are especially likely to notice that their eyes feel dry and uncomfortable in the winter.

Eight tips for preventing or soothing dry, itchy eyes in winter:

Blink. Blinking and closing the eyes redistributes and establishes a tear film over the front of your eyes, which improves vision, comfort and lubrication.

Using artificial tears or eye drops can help keep the eye moistened. There are several remedies, including over-the-counter gels, drops or lubricants, to help resolve minor irritations. Avoid using eye drops that promise to remove redness, however. These work by temporarily constricting the blood vessels, and chronic use of these types of eye drops can cause irritation. (If you need to administer soothing eye drops to a child who resists, here’s a technique for using eye drops with children.)

Don’t rub your eyes. This can lead to inflammation, affect the quality of tears and cause painful corneal abrasions.

Consider prescription treatments that are available for those experiencing more severe cases of dry eyes.

Use warm compresses to try soothing the eyes.

Use humidifiers at home (be sure to empty the water collection tank and keep a clean filter in the machine).

Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect eyes against wind and damaging UV rays. If you tend to forget shades in mid-winter, try stashing a pair in the car, a coat pocket or your purse so you’ll have them when you end up outdoors on a bright day.

When participating in outdoor activities, wear an athletic visor or mask, or goggles appropriate for your sport, to help protect the eyes from harsh weather elements.

If you’re dealing with dry eyes all the time, not just on a few winter days, talk to your eye doctor, because there are treatments that can help with chronically dry eyes.
